On the R539 through Schoemanskloof, between Machadodorp and the N4 at Montrose, west of Nelspruit.
The course was laid out on the escarpment above Schoemanskloof in 1995, and the ground was left as the mountain made it. The fairways climb and fall with the slope, so you see the valley from a different height on almost every hole. The second nine plays the same greens from different tees, so each one comes at you from a new angle.
Off the fairways the mountain is left as it is. The tall grass is played as a hazard, there’s water in places, and baboons live up here too, so give them room if you meet them out on the course. At Jakelskloof, the spectacular views are as much a part of the round as the golf.
The sun comes up over the mountain and onto an empty first tee.
The low sun turns the fairways gold.
The last light goes down over the valley while you sit on the stoep above the ninth green.
